Li Auto to Launch Automated Charging Station in Q2 2026 - It Will Make EV Charging More Convenient

Li Auto, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer specializing exclusively in all-electric SUVs, has announced plans to launch automated charging stations nationwide in the second quarter of 2026. The objective of this initiative is to make EV charging significantly more convenient, requiring minimal driver involvement.

This decision by the company poses a direct challenge to its rival, Nio, which currently holds a leading position in the electric vehicle charging sector within China. Consequently, EV charging is set to become even more convenient for EV owners in China, as they will now have an additional option available after the launch of Li’s automated EV charging station.

What exactly is this automated EV charging station that is about to be launched by Li Auto?

The automated EV charging stations that Li Auto is set to launch in China in the near future are, in fact, “smart” EV charging stations in which robots and sensors will play an important role.

The key feature of Li Auto’s automated EV charging station is that the driver is not required to expend any manual effort whatsoever to charge their electric vehicle.

Essentially, with these automated EV charging stations, all you need to do is drive your vehicle and simply park it near the designated charging point; subsequently, utilizing robots and sensors, the vehicle will automatically plug itself in and begin charging.

Furthermore, the payment will be deducted automatically, and once the charging of the electric vehicle is complete, the sensors and robots will automatically detect this and disconnect the plug.

What’s the current charging infrastructure of Li Auto?

Currently, within more than 280 cities across China, there are over 4,000 supercharging stations operated by Li Auto; additionally, there are more than 22,000 charging points, which include both 4C and 5C chargers, whose charging times are 10 to 12 minutes and 15 to 20 minutes, respectively.

The number of 5C charging stations currently being operated by Li Auto stands at 600, and this figure is gradually increasing across the country. It is expected that by the end of the year 2026, this number will reach 1,000. The maximum charging capacity at 4C charging stations is 360 kW, while at 5C charging stations, it is 520 kW.

What is Nio’s standing within the EV charging industry in China?

Much like Li Auto, Nio is also an EV manufacturer; however, it plays an important role in the EV charging industry, as it is the largest player within the country.

The difference between Li Auto and Nio is that Nio offers a battery swapping service alongside standard EV charging. Currently, there are over 3,700 battery swapping stations and thousands of supercharging stations across the country; the total count of its charging network is estimated to exceed 8,000.

For EV owners in China, battery swapping is more convenient than charging; even the fastest charging process takes at least 12 to 15 minutes, whereas battery swapping can be completed within just three minutes.

As of early February 2026, Nio had completed over 100 million battery swaps. It now remains to be seen whether the launch of Li Auto’s automatic charging stations will have any impact on Nio, or if the company will adopt a different strategy.
