Telangana Employees Get Flat 20% EV Discount on Two and Four Wheelers With Zero Budget Impact

The Government of Telangana has announced that its employees can now purchase electric vehicles at a 20% discount. It has been made possible by the state government negotiating with automakers. It is not coming from any subsidy, meaning it will not make any difference to the state government’s budget.

The automaker agreed to offer a discount of 20% because the number of government employees in Telangana exceeds 5,00,000, and there is a strong expectation of bulk purchases. Thanks to this concession, the family stands to benefit by ₹4 lakh.

Automakers Giving Discount 

Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Gravton Motors, and Ather Energy are automakers that have agreed to sell electric vehicles to state government employees in Telangana at a 20% discount following a negotiation process with the Government of Telangana.

It was announced personally by Telangana’s Transport Minister, Ponnam Prabhakar, with the aim of encouraging state government employees to switch from ICE vehicles to electric-powered vehicles, thereby encouraging the general public of the state to also prefer purchasing EVs.

A 20% discount offer is being provided on all EVs, whether they are two-wheelers or four-wheelers. Furthermore, there are no restrictions regarding pricing; regardless of the price point at which you purchase an electric vehicle, you are guaranteed to receive the discount.

What’s the government of Telangana’s motive behind the discount?

The underlying motive behind the 20% discount negotiated by the Government of Telangana is to fulfil environmental goals alongside economic ones, which are as follows:

• The primary objective is to promote green mobility, encouraging people to opt for electric vehicles instead of petrol and diesel vehicles, thereby minimising air pollution within the state.
• The other objective is to make electric vehicles even more affordable; the Government of Telangana has not only persuaded automakers to offer a 20% discount but has also completely waived road tax and registration costs.
• Telangana CM Revanth Reddy desires that electric vehicles be utilised for all government operations so that the public, inspired by this initiative, considers making the switch to EVs and subsequently puts that plan into action.
• It implies more than just encouraging people to adopt EVs; its objective also includes establishing charging stations, both at offices and in public spaces, with the active participation of the private sector. In essence, the overarching goal is to build an EV ecosystem.
