Leapmotor D19 Launched: Flagship SUV with Hybrid & EV Powertrains Debuts in China

The Leapmotor D19, a full-size sport utility vehicle, has been introduced in the Chinese market with plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains. The hybrid is available in two variants: 400 km and 500 km, which is available with the price range from ¥219,800 to ¥239,800, translating to ₹26.8 lakh and ₹29.2 lakh, respectively.

The all-electric is available in three variants: 620 km, 720 km and 680 km (tri-motor), whose prices are ¥239,800, ¥249,800 and ¥269,800; it translates to ₹29.2 lakh, ₹30.5 lakh and ₹33 lakh, respectively. In China, the main rival for one with the hybrid powertrain is the Li Auto L8, and for all-electric, it is the XPeng G9

Size, Seating & Practicality

The D19 comes with a seating capacity of 6 people with a layout of 2-2-2 and 7 people with 2-3-2. Its length is 5,252 mm, width is 1,995 mm, height is 1,780 mm, wheelbase is 3,110 mm and ground clearance is 187 mm. It has a boot space of 337 litres with a hidden storage of 88 litres, and there’s also a frunk of 176 litres in the all-electric variants.

Bold, Modern & Aerodynamic Design

The D19 has a full-width ‘Cosmic Horizon’ light bar in the front, giving it a futuristic look; it has a split headlamp setup – the main headlights are placed lower and DRLs are above. It improves visibility and also gives it a modern EV look. It gets a closed-off front grill for better aerodynamics and to improve efficiency.

Looking from the sides gives it a luxurious presence with massive proportions. The handles on the entry door are kept flush for better efficiency and improved practicality. It features a double-tone ‘silver crown’ roof, adding the premium touch. It is equipped with 21-inch alloy wheels, and smooth body lines emphasise its elegance.

The back also gets the LED light bar, the same as the front end; with the signature lighting, it becomes recognisable even at night. It has a DISD interactive light panel that adds modernness, and a wide and clean tailgate gives the modern and premium finish. The bumper at the back is subtly sporty to give it a little sporty look without compromising the luxury.

Interior Layout, Features & Technology

The cabin features a futuristic “wraparound” cockpit, which uses the premium materials leather, wood trim, and velvet headliner. It has a 17.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment; think of it as the control centre of the cabin. Also features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that shows all driving data and a 60-inch AR head-up display which projects the primary driving information on the windscreen.

For the entertainment of rear passengers, it gets a 21.4-inch 3K screen monitor that is mounted with a ceiling with a 6-inch control screen. The one with a seating capacity of 6 people gets caption seats in the second row. It gets zero-gravity in all rows for both seating layouts. Seats in the second and third rows support reclining of 145° and 131°, respectively. 

All seats are electronically adjustable, which come with switch heating, ventilation, massage, and memory functions, and it also features heated steering wheels for driver comfort. The cabin also gets some amazing features, including an oxygen generation system, a built-in fridge with a capacity of 8.1 litres for cooling and heating from -6°C to 50°C, and a 23-speaker premium audio system for a theatre-like audio experience.

The cabin comes with 16 million colours of ambient lighting and a fragrance system with 3 scents, which enhances mood and cabin atmosphere. The infotainment system is powered by dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chips, which have 1280 TOPS of computing power that features a voice assistant, 3D vehicle visualisation and lane-level navigation.

It gets ADAS, which works with 28 sensors and LiDAR; it supports Navigate on Autopilot, smart parking and highway assist. For practicality, it gets a panoramic glass roof that makes the cabin quite spacious and also features fold-out tables and storage to help the occupants with eating and working conveniently.

Powertrain & Performance 

The plug-in hybrid variant comes with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that works as a generator and features a double-motor setup. The drivetrain is AWD, and the combined power output of both motors is 536 hp.

It is available with two battery packs, which are 63.7 kWh and 80.3 kWh, giving the CLTC range of 400 km and 500 km, respectively. It is based on 800-volt charging 30-80% in 15 minutes.

The first two all-electric variants are with a double-motor setup, and the last one is with a triple-motor whose power output is 550 hp and 724 hp, respectively. All three variants are available with an all-wheel drive configuration and single-speed automatic transmission.

It is available with two battery packs, which are 99.6 kWh and 115 kWh; the standard one gives the CLTC range of 620 km, and the one with a large battery pack has a range of 720 km. Note that the triple-motor setup has a large battery pack; its range on a full charge is 680 km. The acceleration timing for 0-100 km/h for the same is 3.94 seconds.
