BYD Atto 2 Refresh Spotted: Goes RWD, Bigger, Adds LiDAR ADAS

A Chinese auto enthusiast recently spotted a refreshed BYD Atto 2, an all-electric sport utility vehicle, in China. The spy shots of the same are floating on the web. In the images shared online, this vehicle is partially camouflaged, revealing its exterior (front and side) and interior (first row).

Outside, it gets a closed-off grille for minimalistic design and better aerodynamics; integrated LED headlights; the slim daylight running lights are placed below and headlamps are placed just above the DRLs strip, connected via gloss black trim that has BYD lettering in the center for branding; side air curtains to improve airflow; and lower air intakes to keep the electronics cool.

Other notable things on the exterior are side door and wheel arch cladding to add SUV characteristics and aesthetics; ten-spoke alloy wheels enhance its road presence; flush-type door handles reduce drag and improve aerodynamics; and a double-toned front door integrated outside rear-view mirror gives a clearer view of traffic behind.

Inside, it has a two-spoke steering wheel with physical buttons for shortcuts and control, under which there’s a fully digital slim horizontal instrument cluster showing all the driving-related data, such as speed, battery level, driving range, navigation prompts, and energy flow.

The center of the dashboard is equipped with a large floating touchscreen infotainment system that is all set to support OTA software updates, connected car technology, an AI-based voice assistant, and wireless multi-device connectivity for smooth video and audio streaming.

Its center console gets two wireless phone charging pads to charge the phones conventionally and two cupholders for better practicality for both the driver and co-passenger. Other things visible on the front row are dashboard-integrated AC vents, soft-touch upholstery for the seat, and premium-like trims for the dashboard and doors.

China’s MIIT filing catalogue release has already revealed the technical details. The upcoming refresh will get a permanent magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle with a single-speed automatic transmission featuring a rear-wheel drive drivetrain.

Set to come with two different lithium-ion blade battery packs that are 42 kWh and 52 kWh. With the standard battery pack, the electric motor generates the power of 100 kW (134 hp) and gives the CLTC range of 410 km, but with the larger one, it delivers 120 kW (161 hp) and runs up to 505 km.

Built on the electrical architecture of 400 volts, meaning the refreshed BYD Atto 2 won’t support fast charging, at least 800-volt architecture is required for the same. It may support DC charging up to 150 kW, which will take around 15 minutes to add a decent CLTC range for city driving.

Reportedly, it will come with a 150 mm longer wheelbase than the existing model, meaning the distance between the axles is now 2,770 mm in refreshed Atto 2. Even length and width are increased by 355 mm and 65 mm; now they measure 4,665 mm and 1,895 mm, respectively, and height remains 1,675 mm.

The front suspension is set to be a McPherson strut, and the rear is multi-link independent. Front wheel braking work is done by a ventilated disc, but the rear wheels’ is by a drum. It is set to come with a seating capacity of 5 people in a 2-3 layout with larger boot space than the existing model, which will help carry more luggage.

Many reports suggest that it will feature the DiPilot 300 intelligent driving system as optional, which works with 1 roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, multiple high-resolution cameras, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 300 TOPS of AI computing power from the NVIDIA Orin-X processor.
