2027 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Arrives With 220 HP, Up To 71 km Electric Range

The Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota has officially announced on July 16, 2026, that the 2027 Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid will arrive in dealerships across the US in Summer 2026. It is all set to make its debut in four different variants; they are SE, XSE, Nightshade Edition, and XSE Premium.

Following the launch, it will strengthen its position against the Lexus NX 450h+, Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, and Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid.

Engine & Motor Setup 

Get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder 1,987 cc naturally aspirated petrol-powered internal combustion engine under the hood and a permanent magnet synchronous motor on the front axle. Notably, the Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT) is mated with the ICE and the PMSM. Its drivetrain is front-wheel-drive. 

The combined power output is 220 hp (164 kW), which helps it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in just 6.6 seconds. Equipped with the 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, whose emission-free EPA-certified range is 44 miles (71 km) for the SE variant, for the last three, the same is 39 miles, which translates to 63 kilometers. As a hybrid, it gives a fuel economy of 51 MPG (21.68 km/l).

The length and width of the 2027 Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid are 4,598 mm and 1,781 mm. The height for the SE variant is 1,420 mm, but for the XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium trims, it is 1,430 mm. Its wheelbase is 2,751 mm. The ground floor for base one is 142 mm and 152 mm for the last three.

All variants are equipped with alloy wheels; the SE has 17-inch ones with wheel covers, the XSE and XSE Premium have 19-inch ones, and the Nightshade Edition has 19-inch black-finished ones. Available with 5 people seating capacity in 2-3 arrangements with 575 liters of cargo space behind the second row. 

Color Options 

Available with seven color options. Among them, four, including Cutting Edge, Guardian Gray, Reservoir Blue, and Inked, are standard across the variants; Wind Chill Pearl and Supersonic Red are available for selected variants; and Karashi is only for the Nightshade Edition exclusive. 

Exterior Design

Upfront, it has a Toyota logo just below the hood for branding, slim projector LED headlights that seem connected with the black trim and give a dynamic look, boomerang-shaped LED daylight running lights enhancing daytime visibility, and vertical air intakes on the bumper for cooling of electronic parts. 

At the sides, it features black wheel arches, mechanical door handles for the front door, a hidden C-pillar integrated for the rear one, and an A-pillar-mounted blacked-out outside rear-view mirror, and the rear features a full-width LED taillight, a boot-hip-mounted spoiler, and a bumper-integrated side reflector. 

Cabin & Technology

Inside, it has a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel behind which there’s a 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster showing all driving data. The SE variant gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system at the center of the dashboard with a six-speaker sound system, and the other three feature a 12.3-inch display with an eight-speaker unit.

The infotainment system supports wireless connectivity via Android Auto and Apple Carplay. It also supports Toyota Intelligent Assistant.  Other notable features are dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless phone charging pad, and heated front seats to keep the occupants warm in winter. In the last three variants, the driver’s seat is powered. 

Safety Features 

The cabin has a total of eight airbags, including two front, two front side, two side curtain, one driver knee, and one front passenger seat cushion. Comes with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 featuring:
