Leapmotor, one of the Chinese EV manufacturers, which sells cars in the domestic and overseas markets with the battery-electric and extended-range electric powertrains in the Indian market, is all set to launch the car with the plug-in hybrid electric powertrain for overseas markets such as the European, Southern African, Asian, and other markets.
Currently, Leapmotor is operating in more than 40 countries, where they have introduced dozens of car models as BEV and EREV. A recent Chinese media report says that the Leapmotor will debut a car with a plug-in hybrid electric powertrain in the internal market, not domestic; but it is still unclear which model and what the country will be.
Why are they planning to launch PHEV models in the overseas market?
Leapmotor has already established a strong foothold in the international market by launching EVs and extended-range electric vehicles; now, to further strengthen this position in the overseas market, it is set to launch a plug-in hybrid vehicle, which becomes an alternative for city driving on EV mode and highway cruising on hybrid mode.
This launch will expand its product lineup and help it reach a wider international customer base. In the first eight months of 2026, Leapmotor has exported 113,138 vehicles to various countries, a significant increase in the sales number compared to the previous year. Reports indicate that sales on the year-on-year (YoY) basis have increased by 327.79%.
In the international market, Leapmotor operates as a joint venture with Stellantis. With this collaboration, the Chinese electric car manufacturer plans to launch plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, including sedans and SUVs, globally, aiming for overseas sales of 400,000 units per year in the future.
Will the Leapmotor PHEVs also come to India?
Leapmotor has not yet made its debut in the Indian market, which means they are not selling any electric vehicle or extended-rate electric vehicle in India so far. Various reports are suggesting that in the near future they may introduce their first model, which can be Leapmotor C10.
Things regarding the PHEVs for the Indian market from Leapmotor are uncertain; after making a debut in India, they may also introduce any PHEV model. Under the mass market segment, only one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is available in the Indian market, which is the recently launched MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV.
In the very near future, BYD will also introduce a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle which is expected to be known as BYD Seal U (Sealion 06). The PHEVs may be a great option for the drivers who want an EV that runs on EV mode for daily driving and kills the range anxiety for the long highway drive with the family on weekends.
If Leapmotor International, the joint venture for the international market, also introduces any PHEV for the Indian market, they may be able to make good sales numbers in the segment by offering a decent EV-mode range at more affordable pricing with better features and technology that enhance comfort, convenience, and practicality.
Leapmotor exports till now.
Leapmotor started exporting the vehicle to the international market back in September 2024. Till now, they have exported 206,310 units, including 7,140 between September 2024 and December 2024, 67,052 in 2025, and 132,118 between January 2026 and December 2026.
