SAIC-Volkswagen, the joint venture between SAIC Motor and Volkswagen Group, is soon going to introduce the SAIC-Volkswagen ID. Era 5X, a compact pure-electric sport utility vehicle, in the near future. China’s MIIT filling catalogue release for the vehicle has revealed its core specifications, confirming that it is going to be the first electric vehicle in the ID. Era series from the joint venture.
Two other vehicles that are sold under the ID series are the SAIC-Volkswagen ID. Era 5S and the SAIC-Volkswagen ID. Era 9X, the first one is a PHEV, and the second is an EREV. Built on the Compact Main Platform, which they have co-developed with Xpeng and China Electronic Architecture. As a five-seater in a two-three arrangement, its length, width, and height are 4,560 mm, 1,896 mm, and 1,630 mm, with the wheelbase of 2,815 mm.
The kerb weight and gross vehicle weight are 1,685 kg and 2,135 kg, respectively. On the rear axle, it gets a United Automotive Electronic Systems-manufactured permanent magnet synchronous motor, TZ220QY173, featuring a rear-wheel-drive drivetrain. The electric motor delivers the maximum power of 155 kW. Filing also reveals its top speed, which is 175 kmph, but its acceleration timing for 0 to 100 kmph is still pending.

Equipped with the lithium-ion battery pack, which they have sourced from CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Jiangsu), SVOLT Energy Technology, and FAW-FinDreams Battery. The capacity of the battery pack is still pending; we are expecting to be around 70 kWh. Details regarding its range on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle conditions are also undisclosed, but it may run around 620 kilometres after each full charge.

Outside, it has split LED headlights like the other two models in the ID. In the ERA series, the daylight running light is placed above with the Volkswagen logo at the centre, and headlamps are placed below on the bumper.
Sides get wheel arches, cladding, black roof rails, semi-hidden flush-type door handles, double-toned outside rear view mirrors with integrated blinkers on the A-pillar, black-outed pillars for the floating roof effect, and ten-spoke mono-tone alloy wheels. The China MIIT filing also reveals that the model will be available for sale with three different wheel size options, which are 17-inch, 18-inch, and 19-inch.

Its rear boasts a full-width LED taillight on the tailgate, which connects with taillamps on the edges, creating a wide stance; it also enhances its visibility at night. The tailgate also has the VW logo at the centre, the same as the one visible in the front, reflecting brand identity. Other key details are roof-integrated spoilers and a black bumper with a horizontal-shaped reflector on the top end on the bumper placement.

Soon they will release its interior, revealing what it gets inside the cabin. It is certain to get a digital instrument cluster under the steering wheel and a touchscreen infotainment system at the dashboard’s centre, which will support over-the-air software updates, wireless multi-device connectivity, and WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
Nothing regarding its launch is confirmed. Some reports suggest that they will start the pre-sale in September 2026, and a month after that the market launch will take place. The SAIC-Volkswagen is all set to position itself against the Deepal S05, Zeekr X, and BYD Atto 3, so we are expecting to cost 150,000 to 200,000 yuan (22,200 to 29,600 USD).
