Tesla Model Y Crosses 600 Sales in India as Price Cut Boosts Demand

From July 15, 2025, Tesla India, the Indian subsidiary of American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, launched the Model Y, a mid-size all-electric crossover, in two variants: RWD and Long Range RWD. Notably, as of August 16, 2026, according to Vahan registration data, the model has crossed the milestone of 600 sales in India.

The delivery for the model began last September, and as of this July, the sales were 578 units. Between the period of August 1 and 16, 60 units were delivered. The sum is 638 units; to reach this number, it took almost 11 months. Last month, a total of 115 units were sold out, registering a month-on-month growth of 203%.

One of the key reasons behind the increase in sales in the Indian market is the reduction of the ex-showroom price for the car, which happened last month. The American EV maker reduced the price by ₹9 lakh, lowering the cost to ₹50.89 lakh from ₹59.80 lakh, for the Premium RWD variant.

The company’s decision of reducing the price for a variant really, as we already have witnessed, compared to June 2026 sales, their sales increased by 77 units in July 2026. The same sales trend is anticipated for August 2026; in the first sixteen days, 60 have been delivered. If for the rest of the month they see the same sales growth, it may even beat the sales number of July 2026.

The price reduction is the main reason behind the sales increase; besides that, the trend of adoption of electric vehicles in the premium segment over the internal combustion engine cars in India has also contributed to it. In July 2026, a total of 736 luxury cars were delivered; on a month-on-month basis, the segment recorded a negative growth of 68 units with 9.24% sales.

Out of total sales, 390 are for BMW, 174 for Mercedes-Benz, 115 for Tesla, 51 for Volvo, and 6 for the remaining. Notably, the Tesla sale in July 2026 is 15.6% of the total. Currently, the American EV maker is selling the one model, Model Y, in two variants, which are Premium RWD and L Premium AWD with seating capacities of 5 and 6 individuals, respectively.

The former is available for sale with the ex-showroom price of ₹50.89 lakh, already mentioned above, and the latter with ₹61.99 lakh. Let’s have a closer look at each.

The RWD gets an electric motor on the rear axle which delivers the power of 299 hp, equipped with a 64 kWh lithium-ion battery pack giving the 500 km WLTP range, supporting a DC charger up to 175 kW that is capable of adding 238 km range with 15 minutes’ charging, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is 5.9 seconds and top speed is 201 km/h.

On the other hand, the AWD trims get one electric motor on each axle, delivering the 514 PS power and 590 Nm torque. It is equipped with an 82 kWh lithium-ion battery that helps it to run up to 681 km on WLTP conditions, and with the maximum 250 kW DC charger, it adds the 288 km range with 15 minutes of charging. Its 0 to 100 km/h sprinting time is 5 seconds, and its top speed is the same as RWD.

The length of the RWD is 4,790 mm, but the AWD measures 4,969 mm; the width is 1,982 mm with folded mirrors and 2,129 mm with extended mirrors; and the height is 1,624 mm for both. The kerb weight of single-motor trim is 1,928 kg, and the same for the double-motor setup is 2,088 kg. Both sit on 19-inch alloy wheels, and a 16-inch touchscreen infotainment system at the dashboard’s centre is standard for both variants.

Notably, the WLTP ranges are claimed by the manufacturer. In the real world, the range may drop by 12 to 15 per cent for driving connections. Among these two models, the Premium is ideal for a family of five that is looking for premium comfort, and the L Premium AWD is a great option for those seeking executive seating in the second row and wanting longer range and more fast charging than RWD.
