XPeng G9L Tested Ahead of Launch: Flagship SUV to Rival Kia EV9, Volvo EX90

On August 3, 2026, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng tested the XPeng G9L, its flagship sport utility vehicle, which launched in the domestic market in the last quarter of 2026. Notably, it is not only for China; the carmaker is all set to introduce it globally like the Mona L03 and the GX. 

Set to make its debut in the Chinese market under the 300,000 yuan segment and give tough competition to the Kia EV9, the Volvo EX90, the Li L8, the AITO M8, and the NIO ES8. Its price is still pending and may cost between 290,000 and 340,000 yuan (₹41.52 to ₹48.68 lakh). The teasing of the G9L reveals what it gets on the sides.

In profile, it gets five-spoke double-toned alloy wheels enhancing the road presence; pronounced wheel arches giving styling; front door-mounted outside rear-view mirrors giving a dynamic side view; and blacked-out pillars creating a floating effect, and hidden flush-type door handles reduce the aerodynamic drag and improve efficiency.

The China MIIT filing image is already available in the public domain, which clearly shows its even front and back design. Upfront, it has a full-width LED taillight just below the bonnet to give it a futuristic look, a body-coloured enclosed grille to ensure better aerodynamics, and bumper-integrated LED main headlamps for better visibility on the road for nighttime driving.

Its rear has a full-width LED taillight, similar to the front-end daylight running light, creating the wide stance; a roof-integrated spoiler just above the windscreen to keep the vehicle stable even at high speeds; a horizontal-shaped braking light on the spoiler to alert the other road users; XPENG lettering on the tailgate; and a silver skid plate on the bumper to enhance the back styling.

The length, width, and height of the XPeng G9L are 5,120 mm, 1,999 mm, and 1,782 mm to 1,795 mm, respectively. Its wheelbase is 3,100 mm; compared to the Volvo EX90, Li L8, and NIO ES8, it is 115 mm, 95 mm, and 30 mm, respectively, but 5 mm shorter than the AITO M8 and similar to the Kia EV9. Comes with 5 people’s seating capacity in a 2-3 layout. It has a kerb weight of 2,720 kg.

Its cabin has a luggage capacity of 1,152 litres, which helps with carrying the small items. Notably, the front seats are zero-gravity seats to enhance seating comfort for the driver and co-passenger. All four doors are electrically operated for convenience; it also adds premiumness. The infotainment system runs on XPeng AIOS with the second-generation Vision-Language-Action (VLA) AI model.

The G9L from the Chinese EV maker XPeng will make its debut as a battery electric vehicle with an extended-range electric motor. They will come with a single motor on the rear axle featuring rear-wheel drive and a double motor, one on each axle, featuring an all-wheel-drive drivetrain. The RWD and AWD of BEVs generate the power of 270 kW (362 hp) and 430 kW (577 hp), respectively.

On the other hand, RWD and AWD of EREV deliver the power of 210 kW (282 hp) and 370 kW (496 hp), respectively. Both variants of the extended-range electric vehicle are equipped with a 110 kW (147 hp) 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol-powered internal combustion engine, which acts as a generator to power the electric motors.

Notably, the transmission for both variants of the BEV and EREV is single-speed automatic. Both battery-electric vehicle variants have a top speed of 200 km/h; they are built on 800-volt electric architecture supporting fast DC charging, which adds the CLTC range of 450 km in 9 minutes. The RWD variant has a claimed range of 850 km; AWD’s details are still pending.

The EREV’s both variants are equipped with a 63.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack; the rear-wheel-drive variant runs up to 350 km under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle condition, and the all-wheel-drive variant gives a range of only 325 km in the same scenario. Details regarding the charging, fuel efficiency, and combined range are still pending.
