Europe's Plug-In Car Sales Surge 30% YoY: Nearly 400,000 Units Sold

In May 2026, a total of 397,212 units of plug-in vehicles were sold in Europe, which includes both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles.

Compared to April 2026 sales, which was 383,739, in May 2026, sales increased by 13,473, registering a month-on-month growth of 3.51%. In May 2025, a total of 305,146 units were sold out; compared to that, in May 2026, sales increased by 92,066 units, registering a year-on-year growth of 30.17%. 

In May 2026, the top ten models contributed to 93,719 units of sales, which translates to 23.59% of 397,212 sales. Refer to the table below to check the May 2026 model-wise sales figures with market share.

Tesla Model Y 

The Tesla Model Y tops the list of top-selling plug-in vehicles with sales of 17,028 units and a market share of 4.30%. In April 2026, only 7,801 units were sold; compared to the same, in May 2026, sales increased by 9,227 units, registering a month-on-month growth of 118.28%. 

In May 2025, a total of 10,630 units were sold; compared to the same in May 2026, sales increased by 6,398 units, registering a year-on-year growth of 60.19%.

BYD Atto 2

The second top-selling model in May 2026 is the BYD Atto 2, including pure electric and plug-in hybrid electric powertrains. 11,219 units have sold out with a 2.80% market share. Compared to the previous month, in May 2026 sales increased by 4,438 units, registering month-on-month growth of 65.45%.

Last May, Build Your Dream sold only 1,401 units of the BYD Atto 2; compared to the same period in May 2026, sales increased by 9,818 units, registering a year-on-year growth of 700.79%.

Tesla Model 3

The third best-selling plug-in vehicle is the Tesla Model 3, with 11,116 units of sales and a 2.80% market share. Compared to previous month sales figures, this month the sales have increased by 6,997, registering a month-on-month growth of 169.9%.

In May 2025, the sales were only 3,054 units; compared to the sale in May 2026, the sale increased by 8,062 units, registering a year-on-year growth of 263.98%.

Skoda Elroq

The Skoda Elroq is the fourth best-selling plug-in vehicle in Europe in May 2026, with a total of 9,594 units and a 2.4% market share. Compared to April 2026 sales figures, the sales decreased by 1,003 units, registering a 9.46% month-on-month degrowth.

In May 2025, Skoda sold only 9,406 units; compared to these sales figures, the sales have increased by 188 units, registering a year-on-year growth of 2%.

BMW X1 & iX1

The 5th model selling plug-in vehicles in Europe is from BMW, including the plug-in hybrid electric X1 and the pure electric iX1, with 8,358 units and 2.10% market share. Compared to April 2026 sales figures, sales in May 2026 have decreased by 1,089 units, registering a month-on-month degrowth of 11.53%.

In May 2025, the BMW X1 & iX1 weren’t on sale in the European market, so the year-on-year growth isn’t applicable for the model.
