Lepas L4 spotted testing in Australia’s Baulkum Hills. The spotting has confirmed that the Lepas mid-size electric SUV will soon arrive in the Australian market for the buyers looking for an entry-level EV.
Chery’s subsidiary Lepas earlier officially confirmed that they will launch three models in Australia, which are Lepas L4 EV, Lepas L6 EV, and Lepas L8 EV. The carmaker has officially confirmed the date for the launch of the L6; it will go on sale in October 2026. The L4 was recently spotted testing on public roads in the country, hinting that it is going to be the second model to be launched.
What has the spotting revealed?
The spied image of the Lepas L4 EV was shared online on the X (formerly Twitter) account with the username @ZappedAU, which shows the rear of the vehicle. At the back, it has a slim horizontal taillight on the tailgate with black trim at the centre with Lepas lettering, a roof-integrated spoiler with the braking light, a diffuser-style bumper, a vertically orientated reflector, and a roof-mounted shark fin antenna.
The rear of the Lepas L4 EV in the spied image is similar to the one already on sale in the internal market. So, it is certain that its sides and front-end exterior design will be similar to the international-spec model. We got the confirmation about it being an L4 model, seeing the badge on the tailgate.
What else do we know about this Lepas L4 EV?
The Lepas L4 EV global debut takes place in April 2026 at the Beijing Auto Show. Any date for its launch in the Australian market is still uncertain, but a report suggests it will happen by late 2026 or early 2027. The specifications and features for the Australian model are still pending.
It is more likely to come with the same powertrain as it is sold in the international market, such as in South Africa and Indonesia. The most recent launch took place in Indonesia, where it got a 160 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor on the front axle featuring an FWD drivetrain.
The PMSM is mated with a single-speed automatic transmission, which has a peak torque of 275 Nm. Furthermore, it gets a 67 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, giving the range up to 600 km on the CLTC cycle. Support DC chargers up to 130 kW that take 20 minutes for 30 to 80 per cent charging.
Even though no changes in the dimensions are anticipated. The length, width and height are set to be 4,400 mm, 1,817 mm and 1,630 mm, respectively, with the wheelbase of 2,700 mm. A seating layout of 2-3 will be available with the cargo capacity of 452 litres to enhance practicality.
Its cabin is set to have a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay that runs on the Snapdragon 8155 infotainment processor. Other features are the 50-ward wireless phone charging pad for enhanced phone charging convenience and a 360-degree camera for surround view.

The Lepas is yet to make it into the Australian market; they make it debut with the launch of the Lepas L6 EV, a mid-size electric SUV, which will compete with the MG S5 EV, Geely EX5, and BYD Atto 3. After making a debut with the L6 model, the L4 will go on sale, and then the L8 will arrive.
The launch of these electric vehicles is confirmed by Lapas for the Australian market. The L4 is set to be positioned as the compact SUV for the family looking for affordable e-cars, then an L6 car will be placed as a mid-size SUV for families looking for a little premium option, and then the L8 vehicle will be launched for the family looking for the most premium option in the large SUV segment.
