The Chinese automobile manufacturer has finally revealed the BYD Mako, a plug-in hybrid electric pickup truck with a double-cab configuration for the Brazilian market. They have introduced the model as a mid-size pickup truck complementing the existing Shark pickup from the brand. This all-new pickup truck is based on the Song Plus platform and resembles the design of its SUV sibling.
They officially haven’t revealed the dimensions, but reports suggest that it is 4.8 metres in length. Outside, it has integrated LED headlights that include daylight running lights and headlamps. A large black grill can be seen on the front end dominating the front fascia. Upfront, it also has the BYD logo below the hood, reflecting branding, and side air curtains for better airflow around the front tyres.
Its sides have a blackout outside rear-view mirror on the A-pillar, mechanical door handle, wheel arch and lower body cladding, side steps for easier ingress and egress, roof-mounted rails, blackout A, B and C pillars, and black alloy wheels. The rear has a full-width taillight with vertically orientated taillamps on the edges and stepped rear bumpers to enhance practicality for loading and unloading.
Other highlights from its exterior are a large cargo bed and a rear windscreen with a braking light. They have revealed its interior. Inside the cabin, it has a three-spoke D-shape steering wheel, whose column has a gear selector. Behind the screen, it features a digital instrument cluster. Its dashboard centre has a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system which runs on the BYD DiLink 100.
Its front and rear suspension are MacPherson strut independent and multi-link independent. Notably, the carmaker has reinforced the springs and shock absorbers to cope with the additional weight of cargo in the pickup. They haven’t revealed the details regarding the braking, but reports suggest it comes with a solid disc on all wheels. Sit on 18-inch alloy wheels which wear 235/60 R18 tyres.
This pickup has BYD’s 5th-generation DM (Dual Mode) plug-in hybrid system. Under the hood, it gets a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol-powered internal combustion engine that delivers 73 kW (98 hp) of power and 122 Nm of torque, and there’s also a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Its ICE and PMSM are mated with a single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.
The combined power output is 166 kW (223 hp) and torque 400 Nm. Beneath the floor, it has a 12.9 kWh LFP battery pack, but the pure-electric range on EV mode is still pending. Firstly, they will launch the pickup with the front-wheel-drive drivetrain, and then an all-wheel-drive option will also go on sale. The AWD will get all from the front axle and a secondary motor on the rear axle.
The Chinese carmaker BYD has confirmed that they will launch the model in Brazil in September 2026. They will reveal the actual price with the launch; we are expecting it to cost between 200,000 and 220,000 Brazilian Reais, which translates to 39,700 to 44,100 USD. After the launch, it will compete with the Fiat Toro and others in the segment.
The pending specifications and features for the BYD Mako will emerge with the launch. The carmaker will unveil the top speed, acceleration timing, fuel efficiency in case of battery depletion, pure-electric and combined range on the day of launch. They have built it for Brazil, but in the future, they may also launch the model in Latin America, Mexico & Argentina, and the domestic market China.
